Yampa River Festival weekend is here. If you're in town and trying to make the most of it — or you've been wondering whether to drive in — this is the local's read on how to actually spend the weekend.
The festival itself runs Friday afternoon through Sunday afternoon along the Yampa Core Trail. Around it, the town is open, the trails are dry, the restaurants are running summer hours, and the weather is usually somewhere between glorious and perfect.
Here's the plan.
Friday Afternoon and Evening
Friday is the soft launch. Vendors are setting up, first heats of river events are starting, and the crowds haven't fully arrived yet.
The play: - Late afternoon: walk the Core Trail from downtown south. Watch the first kayak slalom heats. Less crowded, easier viewing. - Dinner at a Yampa Street patio — close to the festival, you can wander over after. - Evening: acoustic music at the festival main stage. Sweater weather after sundown — May nights in Steamboat still drop into the 40s.
Friday is also a good night to walk around downtown before tourist crowds peak. Restaurants are bustling but not slammed yet.
Saturday: The Main Event
Saturday is the biggest day. Crowds, full event schedule, main music acts, freestyle and slalom finals.
Morning: - Beat the heat on a trail before the day gets going. Spring Creek Trail, Emerald Mountain, or Howelsen if you want a real climb. - Coffee + pastry on the way back. The downtown coffee scene is good and the patios are open.
Midday: - Head into the festival zone around 11 AM. The freestyle kayak competition on the play wave is the most photogenic event of the festival — go watch. - Food trucks for lunch. The lineup varies year to year but it's reliably good.
Afternoon: - Walk the vendor area — local artists, craft food, outdoor gear booths. - Watch the slalom finals. - Find a shaded patch by the river for an hour. It's why we're here.
Evening: - Main music act at the festival stage. - Late dinner downtown or at a patio nearby.
Parking note: Saturday afternoon parking near the festival zone is rough. If you can walk from downtown via the Core Trail (about 15-20 minutes from the south end), do it. Or bike — the trail is bike-friendly.
Sunday: The Local's Day
Sunday is when locals take the festival back from the visitors. Crowds thin, pace slows, the river is calmer, and you can actually enjoy the festival without working for it.
The play: - Brunch at one of the downtown spots — get there before noon for shorter waits. - Walk the festival vendors at a relaxed pace. Some have Sunday-only items. - Watch the paddleboard or slalom finals — typically less crowded than Saturday. - Late afternoon: wind down at a hot springs (Strawberry Park or Old Town Hot Springs).
Sunday dinner downtown is one of my favorite times of the year. Crowds are reasonable, energy is good, weather is usually still beautiful.
What to Bring
A short list:
- Layers. Steamboat May days can be 75 and evenings 45. Both happen in the same 12 hours.
- Sunscreen. Altitude + sun = quick burn. Even cloudy days.
- Water bottle. Stay hydrated at altitude. Refill stations around the festival zone.
- Cash. Some vendors are card-only but cash speeds things up at busy food trucks and small vendor booths.
- A small daypack. Comfortable for wandering all day.
If you're bringing dogs: most of the festival zone is dog-friendly but check signage. Bring water for them. Steamboat trails are dog-paradise but the festival itself gets crowded.
Real Estate Detour for Out-of-Town Visitors
If you're in town for the festival and also doing some property scouting, a few quick notes:
- Friday afternoon is the best showing window. Lighter traffic, easier parking, more time per property.
- Saturday morning early (before 10 AM) is workable. After that, you're competing with festival traffic.
- Sunday is generally a no-go for showings — too many sellers want their weekend back.
